The former president of the Spanish government, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, affirmed that the support expressed by Madrid for the Moroccan initiative for autonomy in the Moroccan Sahara “is in the interests of Spain, its security and its stability. “.
In an interview with the Spanish daily “El Pais”, published on Wednesday, Zapatero considered that “this is a position which is in the interest of Spain, of its security, of its internal policy and of its stability.
“I positively appreciate this position because it is sincere and courageous (…) and taken freely”, noted, in this context, the former head of the Spanish government (2004-2011), noting that it is within the framework of “political coherence”.
For the former Prime Minister, “what the government has done is to clarify and ratify Spain’s position, which is a constructive and supportive position” in Morocco, recalling that since Morocco presented of this initiative in 2007, “the United Nations Security Council welcomed it, and supporting it therefore does not go beyond this framework”.
Zapatero recalled in this sense that the decision taken by the government of Pedro Sanchez is “the explicit confirmation of the policy of Spain since 2008”, date on which this support had already been expressed.
And to conclude: “The peaceful resolution of conflicts must be based on logic and the search for an agreement, and the Spanish government has taken a courageous and correct decision”.
