Indian-British writer Salman Rushdie, author of the controversial novel The Satanic Verses, was attacked on Friday as he prepared to give a lecture in western New York.
According to the Associated Press (AP), a man stormed the stage at the Chautauqua institution where the author was to give his lecture, and began “hitting or stabbing” Rushdie as he presented to the hearing.
The author fell to the ground and the assailant was arrested, says AP.
As a reminder, “The Satanic Verses” has been banned in Iran since 1988. A year later, Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for the author’s death.
