Construction work started on Monday to transform the birthplace of Adolf Hitler in Austria, dating back to 1889, into a police station.
This initiative aims to deter Nazi sympathizers from turning the house into a pilgrimage site.
The decision, made in late 2019, will see the building in Braunau am Inn, a small town on the Austrian-German border, house a police station, district police headquarters, and a branch of a security academy for human rights training.
The issue of ownership was disputed for years and was resolved in 2017 when Austria’s highest court allowed the government to expropriate the property after the owner declined to sell, dismissing the idea of demolition.
