The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a 15% drop in the number of new Covid-19 cases over the past week, with Southeast Asia region still worst hit worldwide with over 1.5 million new infections.
In its latest weekly bulletin, the WHO notes that “the number of new cases and deaths from the novel coronavirus has continued to decline over the past week, with a decrease of 15% and 7% respectively compared to the previous week “.
According to the UN Agency, more than 3.5 million new cases of Covid-19 and more than 78,000 deaths were reported last week around the world. The continents of Europe (-26%) and Southeast Asia (-24%) recorded the largest decline in new cases, while the number of cases reported by the regions of the Americas (-2%) and the Eastern Mediterranean (-1%) was similar to that of the previous week. In contrast, the number of cases increased by 22% in Africa and 6% in the Western Pacific.
With more than 1.36 million new infections, India accounts for the majority of cases recorded in the past week.
Followed by Brazil (420,981 new cases, decrease of 7%), Argentina (219,910 new cases, increase of 3%), the United States of America (153,587 new cases, decrease of 18%) and Colombia (150,517 new cases, 40% increase).
