The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday elected the Czech Republic to succeed Russia on the Human Rights Council.
During the ballot, which was held by secret ballot, 157 countries voted in favor of the single candidacy of the Czech Republic, 23 countries abstaining.
The mandate of the Czech Republic, with immediate effect, extends until December 31, 2023.
Last April, the UN GA adopted a resolution suspending Russia from this UN body because of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Created in 2006, the Human Rights Council is the main United Nations forum responsible for promoting this area. It is made up of 47 member states, elected by the United Nations General Assembly.
In addition to promoting human rights, its mission is to regularly review their situation in UN member countries.
Russia has been a member on and off since 2006. A state can only serve two terms in a row and then it must wait at least a year before it can claim a seat again.
