Some countries, especially European ones, have not been reluctant to see candidates go to Ukraine unmolested. On the other hand, this capital sympathy was not perceptible everywhere in the world and in particular in Africa.
In some nations of the continent, such as Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, the message has not gotten through and the authorities have even risen up against this fact. In Dakar, where Ukraine also supports Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea, the Senegalese executive expressed its deep dissatisfaction with Kiev after the announcement of the enlistment in Senegal of 36 people ready to go and fight against Russia. In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Senegal reports having “learned with astonishment the publication on March 3 on the Facebook page of the Embassy of Ukraine in Dakar of an appeal to foreign citizens to come to the aidfrom Ukraine.
The Senegalese authorities condemned this initiative by the diplomat. The latter was summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and confirmed “registration of 36 volunteer candidates“. “In view of the seriousness of such facts“, according to its press release, the MAE of Senegal condemned “firmly” this practice, and specifies “that the recruitment of volunteers, mercenaries, and foreign fighters on Senegalese territory is illegal and liable to penalties provided for by law. For the anecdote, the diplomat replied that Ukraine was not recruiting mercenaries, but volunteers. The message calling for commitment has been deleted, but the enlistment of certain young people, ready to go and fight in Ukraine, raises questions about their profiles and their motivations, which vary from one individual to another.
In Algeria, the media also report a reaction from the authorities, similar to that of Senegal, although more discreet vis-à-vis the message from Kiev. The Ukrainian Embassy in Nigeria has asked Nigerians wishing to travel to Ukraine to be prepared to pay $1,000 for the ticket and visa. A financial requirement not to the liking of applicants with, in addition, another complication that of the airspace of Ukraine, closed due to the crisis. No need for the authorities to deign to react, there was no “popular” response to Ukrainian requests regarding the difficulties in reaching Ukraine. In Morocco, a source from the Ukrainian embassy recently denied that the latter had received requests from Moroccan citizens wishing to join the Ukrainian resistance for combat purposes. The source even specified the difficulties for candidates to reach Ukraine in the absence of a Schengen visa. Israel was not left out and was the subject of such an announcement. For the time being, there is no question of volunteering or mercenary work in the Hebrew country.
In Europe, Georgia for reasons similar to those of Senegal prevented a group of volunteers, seasoned soldiers of the conflict against Russia, from going to Ukraine. In Germany, the United Kingdom, France or Canada, the authorities do not discourage young volunteers on the other hand, great is the concern of relatives towards those who have no military training and who would serve a priori as cannon fodder.
