Westerners are expected on Wednesday to announce a new set of sanctions against Russia. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is getting impatient and says he can no longer “tolerate” the latter’s indecision.
“I cannot tolerate any indecision after what we have been through,” said Volodymyr Zelensky, after a meeting of Europeans on Tuesday in front of Irish parliamentarians. The Ukrainian head of state denounced “a new rhetoric” and a certain “opposition” to new sanctions.
“While the whole world is aware of the crimes committed against our people, we still have to convince European companies to leave the Russian market, we still have to convince foreign politicians to cut the links of Russian banks with the international financial system, we still have to convince Europe that Russian oil cannot fund the Russian war machine,” he added.
On Wednesday, a new salvo of Western sanctions is expected against Russia after accusations of “war crimes” following the discovery of a dozen bodies of civilians thrown into mass graves.
These measures include sanctions against Russian financial institutions and state-owned companies, as well as sanctions targeting senior Russian government officials and their relatives.
According to the West, and the Atlantic alliance (NATO), Russia is preparing a large-scale attack in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces are currently concentrating their efforts.
While Ukraine is not part of NATO and the question of its possible admission is at the heart of the conflict with Russia, which does not want Western forces to approach its borders, the Alliance could deliver weapons.
“I don’t want to give details, but the supply of anti-tank weapons and anti-aircraft defense systems is being considered,” Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
A meeting Wednesday and Thursday in Brussels of the foreign ministers of the NATO countries, must in particular discuss the needs of the Ukrainian forces. European officials are expected to discuss with their Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kouleba his arms needs.
