The European Commission (EC) proposed on Wednesday to grant further exceptional macro-financial assistance for Ukraine this year, amounting to up to 9 billion euros, its President, Ursula von der Leyen, announced.
Brussels has already granted emergency macro-financial aid of 1.2 billion euros to kyiv, in response to the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to the Head of the European Executive, the EU also wants to “think about the future and the vast effort to rebuild the country”, because it has “a responsibility and a strategic interest”.
The principles of reconstruction should combine investment and reform to ultimately help Ukraine “make its way to Europe”, she explained.
This plan should propose “essential” reforms in areas such as the fight against corruption, administrative capacity, the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, detailed Von der Leyen.
“The plan must be firmly anchored in the green and digital transitions as well as in European core values,” she added.
The EU is also proposing a reconstruction platform under this plan, steered jointly by Ukraine and the Commission and bringing together EU Member States, other bilateral or international donors, international financial institutions and other like-minded partners.
