The situation of Moroccan students in Ukraine is very delicate. The Ministry of Higher Education not being able to find solutions for them ” concrete to their problems, this category of Moroccan students forced to flee the war in Ukraine as well as their parents no longer know who to turn to, especially since they hoped to be integrated into Moroccan universities.
Most students were able to resume their course remotely, others not. Today, Ukrainian universities are waiting for the payment of tuition fees for the second term. But students refuse to pay for lessons they believe were not delivered, which can lead to their expulsion.
In an interview with MoroccoLatestNews UK, Igor Prikhodko, Chargé d’Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Morocco returned to the situation of his Moroccan students. He indicated that his country does not want to jeopardize the rights of these students, whether they are those who continue their studies on Ukrainian soil or those who have decided to leave the country, noting that this is a ” state decision“.
“We try as much as possible to help Moroccan students in order to guarantee their right to continue their studies, especially in view of the current circumstances. But they must understand the current situation and the circumstances of the war,” the diplomat said.
With regard to the expulsion of certain students, Igor Prikhodko, Chargé d’Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Morocco, clearly specified that it is ” a natural consequence of some decisions of students, who decided to leave Ukraine without paying tuition fees“.
” Certainly, there are exceptions related to the existence of a contract between Ukraine and certain countries which allow students to continue their studies and to benefit from licenses. Moroccan students were forced to leave Ukraine because of the war. My family also left the country and only took some clothes and official documents.“, indicated the Ukrainian charge d’affaires.
While emphasizing that the majority of foreign students in Ukraine come from Morocco, Igor Prikhodko did not fail to recall the decision of the Ukrainian Ministry of Higher Education which gave students the possibility of continuing their studies remotely, or even the adoption of a blank year. That said, this last solution was difficult to take, he said.
” If there is a decision to expel students, the head of the department must communicate with the person concerned and inform him of the decision taken, and explain the reasons, which are generally related to tuition fees. In the event that the student is unable to pay the fees, he must report this to the administration. If the student does not communicate with the administration on this point, the latter has the right to take the decision to expel him“, concluded Igor Prikhodko, Chargé d’Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy in Morocco.
