The United Nations, through the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, on Wednesday expressed its thanks to Morocco for its facilitation efforts aimed at reaching compromises on electoral laws between the Libyan parties meeting in Bouznika.

“We thank Morocco for having facilitated the efforts” of the members of the “6+6” mixed commission, charged by the Libyan House of Representatives and Council of State with preparing the electoral laws, the spokesperson underlined. response to a question posed during his daily press briefing in New York.

During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the “6+6” mixed commission announced that its members had reached, after two weeks of meetings in Morocco, a compromise on the laws governing the presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for the end of of year.

The final agreement on these laws will be discussed in the coming days in the presence of the presidents of the Libyan House of Representatives and Council of State, said Jalal Shwehdi, member of the House of Representatives, during the closing session. the work of the 6+6 commission, in which took part Omar Abu Lifa, member of the High Council of State and Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans residing abroad.

Speaking on this occasion, Mr. Bourita stressed that the conclusions of the meeting of the joint commission (6+6) constitute an important step in the process aimed at finding a definitive solution to the Libyan crisis.

This stage can be decisive if it is accompanied for the implementation of the compromises, the Chamber of Representatives and the Libyan High Council of State being the only ones authorized to pronounce on the questions related to the organization of the elections, specified the minister, noting that the two Libyan bodies have accomplished, within the framework of the 6+6 commission, the missions assigned to them by the political agreement signed in Skhirat in 2016.

The Kingdom of Morocco is continuing its efforts to find a definitive solution to the Libyan crisis so as to guarantee the unity, stability and progress of Libya, by supporting its actions aimed at organizing elections in a global, inclusive framework. and pragmatic.

The Bouznika meeting is part of the extension of the series of meetings hosted by the Kingdom, bringing together the various Libyan parties with a view to deepening the dialogue on the ways and means to lead to the resolution of the crisis in this country. , following an approach that provides the right space for dialogue and constructive consultation.

These meetings gave rise to important agreements favorable to the settlement process, led by the Skhirat agreement (2015), the agreement between the speaker of the House of Representatives, Akila Saleh, and the president of the High Council of Libyan State, Khalid El Machri in October 2022 on the implementation of the results of the Bouznika process regarding the positions of sovereignty and the unification of the executive power.

Morocco considers that the settlement of the question of legitimacy in Libya can only take place through presidential and legislative elections that will allow the Libyan people to choose who to entrust with the power of political governance in the country.
