After months of armed clashes, and the insistence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenky to receive heavy weapons from the West, the head of state said on Saturday that the only solution to end the confrontation will be essentially diplomatic.
“The end will be diplomatic,” he said in an interview with Ukrainian television channel ICTV. He seemed to want to continue the conflict nonetheless, indicating that the conflict will continue. It “will be bloody, it will be fighting, but it will definitely end via diplomacy,” he said.
“There are things that we can only achieve at the negotiating table. We want everything back” as before the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, which “Russia does not want”, he added.
The talks between the two countries have been numerous since February but no breakthrough has been recorded. The subject of discussions between Russia and Ukraine varies with each meeting but they always come up against different positions.
“Discussions between Ukraine and Russia will resolutely take place. I don’t know in what format: with intermediaries, without them, in a wider circle, at the presidential level, ”added Zelensky who asked to meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on several occasions.
Both parties accuse each other of ill will. In mid-May, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, Mykhaïlo Podoliak, had estimated that Russia showed no proof of “understanding” of the situation.
For its part, the Kremlin had accused Ukraine of a “total lack of will” to negotiate with Russia to end the conflict.
