The new Omicron variant is worrying in Morocco. Its strong spread among young people raises fears of an upsurge in cases in schools and universities. For its part, the supervisory ministry had announced in a note addressed to the presidents of the universities, that the exams will have to be held at a distance. But members of the Scientific Committee remain in favor of taking the tests in person.
Aware of the challenge of taking exams or even distance education, Moroccan universities have taken a series of proactive measures to limit the spread of the new variant in their enclosures, such as Hassan II University Casablanca, Mohammedia or Rabat.
Indeed, several universities have started to verify the identity of visitors, in addition to checking the vaccination pass at the entrance. The canteens were closed, indoor events (conferences, receptions, etc.) were suspended as well as university, scientific and cultural events which were adapted to the hybrid format to avoid gatherings.
While the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Abdellatif Miraoui, called on university presidents to hold exams, meetings, conferences and other events remotely to limit the spread of the new variant, discussions are still ongoing to decide on the formula that will be adopted for the passing of the exams, scheduled for January 2022. The option of remote exams has also been the subject of much criticism, due to the ” weak technologies and inequalities of opportunity“.
A pedagogical commission has thus been set up to decide on the nature of the measures to be taken for the smooth running of the exams as well as the formula that will be adopted. A meeting of the said commission was also held on Tuesday, December 28, at Mohammed V University, according to Omar Hanich, Vice-president of the UMV who confided in MoroccoLatestNews.
The detection of Covid-19 cases in several schools has upset all the forecasts and all the calculations of professionals in the education sector who fear the spread of the new variant within universities as well. There is even talk of extending vacations and distance learning.
But according to a member of the Anti-Covid Scientific Committee, it is likely that university exams take place face-to-face, as happened over the past year despite the emergence of the Delta variant, which appeared at the same time. time that the exams period.
Moreover, and during the year 2020, 56,000 students passed the entrance examination to the Faculties of Medicine without any problem, underlined this member of the Scientific Committee, applauding on this occasion the deans and officials within the universities, which according to him, have succeeded in this bet. ” It is enough just to respect the precautionary measures” , he said.
