The Political Bureau of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) met in periodic session on Thursday, July 20, 2023 and expressed its full support for the position of the Secretary General of the party, Nabil Benabdellah, regarding Israel’s recognition of the Moroccanity of the Sahara. This diplomatic step is considered a major achievement for Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of King Mohammed VI, thus strengthening the country’s position within the international community.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the Political Bureau stressed that this recognition is part of the multiple positions of support for Morocco adopted by many countries. These positions in favor of a definitive political solution for the fabricated regional conflict of the Sahara are based on the autonomy initiative under Moroccan national sovereignty.
Thus, the PPS Office expressed the hope that this significant step will help promote efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East, by encouraging Israel to play an active role in achieving this goal. This should go through the recognition of all the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people to their lands, including their right to establish a free, independent and viable State, with Jerusalem as its capital.
The PPS also attaches particular importance to the issue of equality, considered central to the party. Thus, he called on the government to really work in favor of improving the position of Moroccan women.
However, the Political Bureau noted with concern the government’s delay in implementing concrete measures aimed at establishing real equality between men and women in all areas and at all levels.
The bet, on the other hand, reaffirmed the importance for the government to assume its responsibility in the revision of its concept in terms of reforming the penal code and the Family Code, noting that it is essential to engage in a peaceful and thoughtful debate on this subject to strengthen the rights of Moroccan women and their position, in accordance with international commitments and constitutional requirements, while responding to ongoing social developments.
The PPS also welcomed the revision of the agreement for the automatic exchange of financial information, thus demonstrating a commitment to transparency and the rule of law, noting that this measure safeguards the legitimate interests of Moroccans residing abroad (MRE). The Political Bureau of the PPS also expressed its appreciation for the decision of the House of Representatives to suspend and postpone the vote on two bills relating to the agreements for the exchange of tax declarations and the automatic exchange of financial information, hoping that the government will resume negotiations on the content of these agreements.
