The officialization of the Amazigh language in debate on May 17 and 18 in the House of Councilors

The Chamber of Councilors is organizing, on May 17 and 18, an interactive meeting-debate on “the main stages of the materialization of the official character of the Amazigh language and the modes of its use in the plenary sessions and the structures of the second Chamber” .

A press release from the 2nd Chamber specifies that this debate, organized in partnership with the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture (IRCAM) and the support of the Morocco-European Union institutional twinning program and the program to support the role of parliament in the consolidation of democracy in Morocco, seeks to enrich the contributions relating to recommendations and proposals included in the framework of the implementation of the action plan of the House of Councilors in terms of the materialization of the official character of the Amazigh language in the work of this chamber.

The work of this reflection meeting, which will be chaired by the President of the House of Councillors, Naama Mayara, will revolve around the examination of the various constitutional and institutional processes followed by Morocco in favor of the officialization of the language. Amazigh in all its diversity and as a tool for promoting democracy and sustainable development.

This debate, enhanced by the participation of experts from UNESCO and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), is also, according to the same source, an opportunity to highlight the promising opportunities offered by the legislative institution in its openness to all national and international linguistic expressions, which made it possible to consolidate and develop the role of parliament in terms of representativeness, control, legislation, evaluation of public policies, as well as communication and openness to the social environment.

The press release adds that this meeting will also be an opportunity to review the experiences and expertise accumulated by certain national institutions, in particular IRCAM, in the promotion and officialization of the Amazigh language, in addition to the comparative analysis of experiences. in the management of linguistic diversity in plenary sittings and in the various structures of similar parliamentary institutions.

The work of this interactive conference will be divided into two axes; namely “Linguistic diversity: lever of participatory democracy and sustainable development” and “The action plan of the House of Councilors relating to the materialization of the official character of the Amazigh language and its use in plenary sessions”.

The meeting will be marked by the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Chamber of Councilors and IRCAM governing the areas of technical support, skills improvement, continuing education and this, for a smooth use of the Amazigh language. in discussions and work.
