The accession of the Moroccan Parliament as a permanent observer member of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) constitutes a contribution to the action of this regional parliamentary union, affirmed the new president of this institution, Amado Cerrud Acevedo.
Speaking during a meeting in Guatemala with the permanent representative of the House of Councilors to the Central American parliament, Ahmed Lakhrif, Mr. Acevedo also said that he appreciated the role played by the second chamber of the Moroccan parliament in strengthening relations between the Kingdom and the countries of Central America, says a statement from the House of Councilors.
For his part, Mr. Lakhrif expressed his pride in the privileged relations uniting the Moroccan Parliament and PARLACEN and in the achievements made in a short time.
In this sense, he recalled the main stages that have marked these relations since the Laayoune declaration which crowned the historic meeting of the executive office of PARLACEN and the office of the House of Councilors, in July 2016, in which this regional parliament expressed its support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and for the peaceful intervention of Morocco to ensure free civil and commercial movement through the border post of El Guerguerat.
Mr. Lakhrif also mentioned the obtaining by the House of Councilors, in February 2022, of the status of “advanced partner” of PARLACEN.
He also reviewed the latest developments of the national cause and the achievements made by Morocco in the process of consecration of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, welcoming the positions of PARLACEN supporting the national cause of the Kingdom, stressing that the declaration of Laayoune remains a reference document for relations between the Moroccan parliament and PARLACEN.
For his part, Mr. Acevedo, who was accompanied by members of the PARLACEN executive office, expressed the readiness of this regional parliamentary forum to consolidate the distinguished relations between the two legislative institutions and to work for the development of programs at the serving the interests of the peoples of the two regions.
In this regard, he highlighted Morocco’s place and its geostrategic position which make it a gateway to the countries of the region for more cooperation and rapprochement with African and Arab countries.
Mr. Acevedo also noted the importance of benefiting from Morocco’s pioneering experiences, particularly in the field of alternative energies and in matters of migration-related policies, calling in this regard for the implementation of the proposal by the President of the Chamber of advisers to hold a joint parliamentary forum dealing with various issues related to migration.
Referring to the artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara, he stressed that PARLACEN supports all peaceful solutions and initiatives aimed at promoting coexistence.
At the end of this interview, Mr. Lakhrif took part in the work of the General Assembly of PARLACEN and took the oath for the renewal of his mandate as permanent representative of the House of Councilors to the Central American Parliament, which he occupies since January 6, 2016.
On this occasion, Mr. Lakhrif said he was proud to continue his work as permanent representative of the House of Councilors to the Central American Parliament, affirming that the priority given by the Second House to strengthening relations with Latin American parliaments is based on a strategic choice of the Kingdom in favor of the consolidation of South-South cooperation, as advocated by HM King Mohammed VI.
