Algeria is hosting this summer (June 25/July 6) in Oran the 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games, a competition comprising 24 disciplines. That said, some sports federations in the European Union (EU) have refused to participate for ” insufficient guarantees expected“.
While the first edition, organized in 1951 in Alexandria in Egypt, included only 11 countries, namely Italy, France, Spain, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Lebanon, Syria, Malta and the Principality of Monaco, this 19th edition of the JM will see the participation of 26 countries for 24 disciplines.
Among its countries are Morocco, France, Italy, Libya, Turkey, Lebanon, Tunisia, Monaco, Malta, Greece, Croatia, and others. However, some sports federations have waived participation in this sporting event because of “ expected guarantees that were not provided by the organizers”, like the French Equestrian Federation (FFE).
Indeed, the FFE has made it known “ only after consultation with the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) and the federal show jumping staff”, she has “taken the decision to give up the participation of the French team in the Mediterranean Games of Oran (ALG), scheduled for June 30 and July 3, 2022“.
In a press release, the FFE explains that it mobilizes French riders for each international event as soon as it is qualified. That said, and despite the many steps taken both at the sporting and administrative level, in the same way as other European teams such as Spain or Italy, the expected guarantees could not be provided by the organizer“, specifies the FFE.
The French Equestrian Federation continues that in ” the absence of a specific sports program from the Organizing Committee of the Mediterranean Games of Oran and of a logistical and sanitary system guaranteeing the well-being of the horses, it is with regret that the FFE has taken this decision“, notes the same source.
If the FFE has communicated its decision, others should not delay, in particular those of the Spanish Equestrian Federation and the Italian Federation of Equestrian Sports.
It should be noted that many foreign voices have recently been raised to question Algeria’s ability to properly organize this international sporting event.
In this same context, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had received on January 31, the Commissioner for JM Oran-2022, Mohamed Aziz Derouaz, who made him by ” the concerns of the Organizing Committee in order to bring together the best conditions for this event”.
It should be recalled that during the last edition of the Mediterranean Games, held in 2018 in Barcelona (ESP), the French tricolor collective composed of Félicie Bertrand/Sultane des Ibis, Alexandra Paillot/Tonio la Goutelle, Titouan Schumacher/Atome Z and Pierre -Alain Mortier/Just Do It R was adorned with silver. Individually, Félicie Bertrand / Sultane des Ibis took gold ahead of Alexandra Paillot / Tonio la Goutelle, recalls the FFE, noting that the appointment is already given for 2026 in Italy.
