With the approach of the 2022 World Cup which will take place at the end of the year, Morocco is fishing for new talents, more particularly dual nationals who have not yet decided on their choice of selection. The task could turn out to be more complicated than expected for the FRMF.
Fouzi Lekjaâ had already announced that he was in contact with many dual nationals, including Mohamed Ali-Cho, Sofiane Diop and Amine Adli.
“The dual nationals are Moroccan. We had contact with Sofiane Diop (Monaco), Amine Adli (Bayer Leverkusen) and Mohamed Ali Cho (Angers)”he said.
However, according to the latest Foot Mercato revelations, some of the players targeted by the FRMF would be more difficult to convince than others.
A name that would come up the most in recent years is that of Amine Adli. Trained in Toulouse and voted best player in the championship last season, he is currently playing at Bayer Leverkusen.
Torn between France and Morocco, the 21-year-old midfielder had already refused a first call-up from Vahid Halilhodzic for the friendly matches against Ghana and Burkina Faso, before rejecting the outstretched hand of the Bosnian coach a second time for CAN 2021 a few months later.
Since then, he has continued to evolve with the France Espoirs team, with the ambition of experiencing the joys of the France team. A file which is therefore very complicated for the national team.
“Amine is a senior player for the France Espoirs team”confided a close friend of his entourage to FM, suggesting that the choice of Morocco is not a priority.
The FRMF draws in Ligue 1
Another file that is of great interest to the Moroccan body, as announced by its president, Mohammed Al-Cho. Like Moroccan internationals Sofiane Boufal and Azzedine Ounahi, the young talent is playing in the ranks of SCO Angers.
A nugget that is spoiled for choice between Morocco, France, England and Côte d’Ivoire. The one who appears in the France Espoir U19 team is a must-have for the FRMF which will bring out all the arguments to convince him to join the den of the Atlas Lions.
Vahid Halilhodzic and Fouzi Lekjaa have regular discussions with the player’s entourage and in particular his mother.
“The player’s clan has also traveled to Morocco several times to visit the facilities and was invited last fall to attend two qualifying matches for the World Cup”says the same source.
The FRMF continues its shopping in Ligue 1, with Sofian Diop on its shelves, the midfielder of AS Monaco continues to prove itself with the Espoirs, thus becoming a key player.
Morocco will have to compete for the 21-year-old’s favor not only with France, but also with Senegal, although Mountakhab have a head start on the record. And the main concerned does not close the door to a possible arrival at the Atlas Lions.
The EN failed by two dual nationals
If the FRMF continues to work on many issues to strengthen its workforce on the sidelines of the 2022 World Cup, it may well be forced to throw in the towel in some cases, starting with Lois Openda or Issa Diop.
The first, less known in the football sphere and trained at Club Brugge, had long aroused the interest of Vahid Halilhodzic.
Author of 18 goals and 5 assists in 41 games this season with Vitesse Arnhem, Lois Openda has never responded favorably to the approaches of the Moroccan federation favoring his adopted country, Belgium, opponent of Morocco in the group stage of the CDM.
The second, for his part, was very clear about his choice of selection: it will be the France team or nothing. The FRMF had however courted the player for several years, but in vain.
The West Ham player announced the color in 2019.I was born in France, I am French, I owe everything to France, it is my country. Going to another selection because I didn’t go to the France team would be a bit hypocritical on my part. This would go into a default selection. I’m French, I like the France team, I want to play for it. And even if I am never selected, I will not change”… That should be clear.
There is no doubt that the list of the Atlas Lions coach will be eagerly awaited in order to see which of these young talents will opt for the Moroccan team.
