The first vice-president of the Spanish government, Nadia Calviño, said Monday that Algeria’s attitude is explained by its proximity to Russia. She spoke of a “growing bond” between the two countries.
At a time when Western countries are firmly condemning Russia and imposing sanctions on it following the war started with Ukraine, voices are beginning to point the finger at Algeria, which has never hidden its closeness to Moscow.
For Spain, which suffered the wrath of Algeria because of a position of the Spanish State which decided to support the autonomy plan for the Sahara proposed by Morocco, the disproportionate and illogical reaction of Algiers which allowed himself to interfere in his affairs, is not a “surprise”.
The First Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño, estimated in an interview with Catalunya Radio that Algeria’s decision to suspend the friendship treaty with Spain is up to the growing connection he has with Russia and his position increasingly aligned with Russia.
The Spanish Minister urged this country to “retreat” and welcomed the reaction of the European Union, which had stepped up to the level of the head of its diplomacy to denounce the Algerian decision which constitutes a threat to the association agreement between Algiers and the EU.
