Eight people lost their lives and dozens were injured on Monday during a stampede at the entrance to the Olembé stadium which hosted the knockout stages of the African Cup of Nations (CAN-2021) between Cameroon and the Comoros.
“A stampede at the entrance to the Olembé stadium left six dead and dozens injured”, indicated the public channel CRTV, noting that the Cameroonian government and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are monitoring “the situation of the injured in the hospitals in the city of Yaoundé”.
Officials at nearby Messassi Hospital said they had received at least 40 injured people as a result of the stampede. “Some are in desperate condition,” said Olinga Prudence, a nurse. “We will have to evacuate them to a specialized hospital,” she added.
