New attempts at illegal migration from Morocco to Sebta were stopped by elements of the Moroccan gendarmerie and military forces. At the same time, the government delegation from occupied Sebta complained that it had not received any feedback on more than 700 reports of minors who entered during the migration crisis this summer.
On Saturday morning, dozens of candidates for migration headed for the Tarajal border post, thinking they could access the town of Sebta. These Moroccan migrants had already gathered at the Moroccan town of Fnideq, nearly 2 kilometers from the border.
But the Moroccan forces present there and in large numbers have dampened the hopes of these dozens of migrants, after yet another attempt recorded in the space of a few days. According to local police sources, quoted by the Spanish agency Efe, this situation has its origins in messages posted on social networks.
After receiving (false) messages indicating a relaxation of border controls on the occasion of the celebration of the New Year, these migrants immediately tried to see on the spot if there was a way to enter Sebta.
According to the same sources, the majority of migrants were young, especially minors. Contrary to messages from social networks, the Moroccan authorities have further tightened control at the Tarajal border by deploying even more agents, especially because of the end of the year.
Across the border, the Spanish Civil Guard did not have to intervene, but deployed a helicopter. As a reminder, around thirty Moroccans were prevented from accessing Sebta last week, after trying to enter the enclave around midnight via the breakwater, once again the Moroccan authorities reacted, avoiding the Civil Guard Spanish to intervene.
On December 24, the Moroccan authorities reinforced the presence of an agent at the border after the dissemination of false messages on social networks, indicating that the borders had been reopened.
However, on the side of the occupied city, accusations against the Moroccan authorities have resurfaced, pointing to the non-response of Morocco to more than 700 reports on the family situation of minors, requested on the situation of Moroccan minors who entered Sebta. during the migratory wave in May.
While Spain is required to respect immigration legislation, especially for unaccompanied minor migrants, the authorities in occupied Sebta find themselves unable to initiate procedures for the repatriation of minors, and point to the lack of response. of the Child Protection Service of the City and at the Moroccan borders, indicates the daily El Faro de Ceuta.
As a reminder, Madrid returned in August more than 920 unaccompanied minors per group of 15 children out of the nearly 1,500 who arrived in May. Before that, the city authorities had not respected European legislation by driving hundreds of migrants including minors back to the border post, preventing them from making an asylum application, by flouting European legislation.
Spanish associations had taken legal action in this regard and opposed the refoulement of minors by the Spanish authorities. In addition, the UN Children’s Committee condemned the practices of Spain which violate the rights of minors, some of whom have been placed in detention centers.
During the migratory wave of May 2021, agents of the Spanish Civil Guard were filmed assaulting children, chasing them through the city, beating them up and throwing tear gas in their faces. The migrants had testified in front of the camera of the unprecedented level of violence they suffered by the Spanish agents.
And while the diplomatic crisis between Rabat and Madrid is still relevant since the illegal reception of the head of the Sahrawi separatist militia, Polisario, in Spain, the head of Moroccan diplomacy, Nasser Bourita, recalled in an interview in May , following the Spanish attempt to Europeanise the migratory crisis, which Morocco had no obligation to protect from borders other than its own.
“Morocco has no obligation to protect borders other than its own. Morocco does not have for vocation to be the policeman of Europe nor its concierge. Morocco is doing it within the framework of a well-understood partnership between Morocco and Spain and between Morocco and Europe, ”Nasser Bourita said on LCI, indicating in passing that we cannot plot and engineer against his partner in the evening and hope the next day that he is loyal.
