Sánchez prepares to defend his positions on Morocco

The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, will appear before the Spanish parliament on Wednesday 19 April to report on the meetings of the European Council held since last February, as well as the evolution of the conflict in Ukraine and relations between Spain and Morocco, including the question of the Sahara.

Pedro Sánchez, should thus appear next week before the plenary session of the Congress, in order to discuss the evolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, but also progress in the relations which unite Morocco and Spain. The question of the Sahara will not escape the agenda of the Spanish parliament either.

According to the media Europa Press, parliamentary sources have advanced that this appearance of Sánchez in parliament will be scheduled next Wednesday at the request of the opposition parties, before the control session, during which will be accumulated several questions that the president of the government had been waiting in the chamber for weeks.

The same source reveals that on February 21, 2023, the Council gave the green light to two hearing requests submitted by the Popular Party (PP) for the Head of the Spanish Executive to report on the commitments and Spain’s positions in relation to the war in Ukraine and the agreements reached at the last High Level Meeting with Morocco, held on February 1 and 2 in Rabat, particularly in relation to the Sahara.

It should be noted that these demands of the first opposition party were supported by the deputies of the Vox and Ciudadanos formations, but also by the far left coalition, Unidas-Podemos and government allies such as the ERC and d other mixed groups. Finally, they were also supported by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).

In addition, the Iberian media claim that Sánchez himself asked, at the end of March, to appear before the parliament to inform the deputies of the conclusions of the last meetings of the European Council, more precisely, the extraordinary meeting that took place on February 9. , as well as the one held on the 23rd and 24th of last month.

As a reminder, Morocco and Spain sealed their great reconciliation a year ago after the Spanish Executive, led by Pedro Sánchez, recognized the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco and expressed its full support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, which he considered to be “the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the dispute”.

Since then, the two strategic partners have worked to solidify their relations to definitively bury the differences of the past and operate with complete transparency and mutual respect. The high-level meeting was the highlight of the importance of this reunion for the two countries. In addition, several agreements have been concluded that benefit both Kingdoms.

On the other hand, the Spanish opposition party PP, aware of the strategic importance for Spain of having a stable and peaceful relationship with Morocco, seems to have maintained a systematic anti-Moroccan position for several months and has triggered a series of criticisms towards the positions of the President of the Spanish government vis-à-vis Morocco, which he will have to defend during his next appearance.
