Eight men suspected of tweeting racist slurs against South Korean footballer Heung-min Son, who plays for English club Tottenham, have been arrested in England and Wales.
The metropolitan police explained on Friday that “thanks to the meticulous work of the police, these anonymous users on social networks have been identified and found”.
This action clearly shows that the police will not tolerate “racist attacks, even if they are committed online”, added the police, noting that the suspects “are suspected of having posted writings, used words or behaved in a manner that incites racial hatred ”.
The 28-year-old South Korean forward was targeted online by fans after Manchester United’s controversial goal was denied in the Premier League matchday 31 meeting.
The abuse against him was reported on a dedicated platform of the Manchester United club, which forwarded the information to the local police.
Four other people were questioned as part of the investigation launched after Tottenham’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United on April 11.
