Payment activity is up in H1-2022

The Interbank Electronic Payment Center (CMI) has published its report on electronic payment activity in H1 2022. It highlights overall achievements in electronic payment activity of around 245.5 million transactions for a total of 200.6 billion dirhams (MMDH).

According to the CMI, this activity, which includes cash withdrawal operations on the ATM network, payment operations with merchants and eMerchants, payment operations on automatic teller machines (ATMs) and Cash Advance, by Moroccan and foreign bank cards, is up 16% in number of transactions and 13.2% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

In Morocco, Moroccan cards recorded during the first half, in payments and withdrawals, 236.9 million operations for an amount of 190.1 billion dirhams, up 14.2% in number of operations and 10.4 % in total amount of transactions.

Transactions using these cards are broken down into withdrawals (73.8% by number of transactions and 88.4% by amount), payment at merchants and eMerchants (25.9% by number of transactions and 11.5% by amount) and in payment on ATMs (0.3% by number of transactions and 0.1% by amount).

In detail, withdrawal transactions by Moroccan cards from ATMs in Morocco totaled, in H1-2022, some 174.9 million transactions for an amount of 168 billion dirhams, up 10.5% in number of transactions and up 9.4% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

Regarding payment transactions by Moroccan cards with merchants and eMerchants affiliated to the CMI, they reached, during the first half of the year, 61.3 million transactions for an amount of 21.9 billion dirhams, up 27% in number. transactions and +18.7% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

Payments by Moroccan bank cards are distributed, in terms of volume, according to the following sectors of activity: Large distribution (24.2%), Stations (10.9%), Clothing (10.3%), Restaurants ( 7.3%), Health Sector (5.8%), Furniture & Electr. (4.8%) and Other sectors (36.8%).

With regard to payment transactions on ATMs by Moroccan cards for the payment of invoices, taxes and the purchase of Telecom recharges, they amounted, at the end of last June, to 0.7 million transactions for an amount of 144.6 million dirhams (MDH), down 23% in number of operations and also 19.5% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

In addition, Moroccan cards with international validity carried out 8.1 million transactions in foreign currencies abroad or on foreign merchant sites, withdrawals and payments, for a total amount of 3.8 billion dirhams, up by +38 .5% in number of transactions and +75.2% in amount compared to the same period of 2021.

With regard to foreign cards, they recorded in Morocco, in payments and withdrawals, 8.6 million operations for an amount of 10.5 billion dirhams with an increase of +106.2% in number of operations and +112.4% in amount.

These transactions are broken down into withdrawals (36.4% by number of transactions and 43% by amount), payments (63.1% by number of transactions and 56.1% by amount ) and in Cash Advance, withdrawals made by debit from the card on TPE, (0.5% in share of the number of operations and 0.9% in share of the amount).
