In May 2022, the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, met urgently with the regional directors, demanding that all patients waiting in dialysis services and centers be treated within a maximum of fifteen days. That said, this request was not successful as a whole due to the low absorption capacity in the dialysis centers.
According to the information obtained by MoroccoLatestNews According to union sources, the lack of beds observed in hemodialysis centers has prompted the managers of certain centers to seek by all means a place for patients, in order to implement the plan ” zero waiting » of the Minister, or by reducing in particular the number of sessions and hours of dialysis for the benefit of patients.
Thus, patients who formerly benefited from three dialysis sessions, now only benefit from two sessions, in centers which experience a large flow of patients, specify the same sources.
In a statement to MoroccoLatestNewsAbdelaziz Afkir, president of the Al-Khair Association for the care of patients with kidney failure in M’Diq-Fnideq, revealed that ” the managers of the hemodialysis centers are forced to manage the situation of the patients in the midst of a series of constraints, the main one being the overcrowding of the centers” and lack of space.
Regarding the reduction in the number of dialysis sessions or hours of hemodialysis for patients, Afkir pointed out that ” as long as the ministry has decided not to keep any patient on the waiting list, the managers of the hemodialysis centers are forced to look for solutions “, noting that” if a patient’s sessions are reduced, it is for the benefit of another patient, because some centers do not have the capacity to receive all patients at once “.
Although Khalit Ait Taleb called on the regional directors of the Ministry of Health to take the necessary measures to make the plan “ zero waiting » a success for the beneficiaries of hemodialysis sessions, the large number of patients with kidney failure in Morocco and the low absorption capacity of health centers have had a negative impact on the nature of the services provided to patients.
On the other hand, the associations which play the role of intermediaries between the patients and the hemodialysis centers suffer from difficulties which limit the effectiveness of their work, all the more so since the medical consequences require significant expenditure which can reach tens of thousands of dirhams according to our sources.
The head of the Al-Khair Association clarified that the association had signed a partnership agreement with the Fnideq Municipal Council since 2017. But the latter has not received any support, he said sorry before adding : “ We must seek help from benefactors to care for patients “.
” Some hemodialysis centers do not have a permanent doctor, which leads patients not to want to go there, and look for other centers. This situation leads to overcrowding in some centers in addition to the fact that patients suffer from a lack of medication. “, he lamented.
While the government has adopted the implementation of the framework bill relating to the national health system, the dysfunctions within this system still persist. Lack of infrastructure, lack of human resources, lack of equipment and the list goes on. A huge serious project is therefore to be expected if Morocco also wants to make the generalization of social coverage a success.
