Panic among summer visitors over the proliferation of jellyfish on the northern beaches

Although they are the most affected by this invasion of jellyfish, the northern beaches are not the only ones affected by this phenomenon. This marine animal is also present in the beaches of the Atlantic coast. Indeed, jellyfish are making a comeback this year, causing concern among summer visitors who fear their stings.

A good swim in the sea? Nothing better, especially when it’s hot. But it can turn into a nightmare when you come across jellyfish. These invertebrates are making a comeback on Moroccan beaches, especially in northern Morocco.

Since the beginning of the summer season, reports of bites have multiplied. A very large number of jellyfish is found on the beaches of Martil, Cabo Negro or even M’diq. The more massive than usual presence of these gelatinous marine animals is however explained by the increase in water temperature, the reduction in the number of their predators and the direction of the prevailing winds.

According to the testimonies of bathers, the “agua viva” is present both in the water and on the sand. The species installed in the beaches of the Mediterranean, and which appears every year is Pelagia noctiluca, a jellyfish of violet color with the globular umbrella which reaches 10 cm in diameter.

It should be remembered that the “agua viva” are stinging animals. Their tentacles are covered with filaments containing poisonous cells. Their bites can immediately cause an inflammatory reaction that is characterized by an intense burning sensation, tingling, pain and itching.

Despite the intense pain caused by these irritations, they are for the most part not serious. Specialists recommend removing the fragments of filaments left on the skin with a thin object or by passing sand over it, avoiding contact with the fingers.

It is then advisable to rinse the wound thoroughly with sea water or vinegar or lemon water. Soft water should not be used, as it will only increase the pain. In the event of a significant allergic reaction, it is essential to go to the nearest doctor or pharmacist.

The attack of this armada of jellyfish does not only prevent holidaymakers from fully enjoying their stay, it can cause financial losses for tourism professionals who rely on the summer period to compensate for the loss of earnings during the crisis of Covid-19.

The latter do not hide their concern for the impact of this phenomenon on the influx of tourists. For their part, fishermen are beginning to experience difficulties in their activity. Indeed, jellyfish attach themselves to the nets of their boats and prevent any catch of fish.
