OPPO hosted its annual tech event, OPPO INNO DAY 2021, in Shenzhen, China, and online in its virtual OPPO INNO WORLD. Under the theme “Reimagining the Future”, the event included an opening speech by OPPO Founder and CEO, Tony Chen, announcing OPPO’s new brand proposition “Inspiration Ahead”.
During the day one event, OPPO showcased its first cutting-edge imaging NPU, MariSilicon X, and the revolutionary OPPO Air Glass. OPPO also presents its first foldable smartphone, OPPO Find N. The Chinese brand looks to the future with a new brand proposition “Inspiration Ahead”
During his opening speech, Tony Chen reaffirmed OPPO’s commitment to developing innovations that revolve around the user experience while announcing the company’s new branding proposition, “Inspiration Ahead”, which takes optimism and inspiration in the face of the challenges and uncertainties that everyone faces.
MariSilicon X, OPPO’s first advanced 6nm imaging NPU
Oppo’s MariSilicon X chip aims to improve the photo and video experience on smartphones, and the Oppo Find X4 Pro would seek to strengthen its game to stand out from the competition in 2022. Its secret weapon: the MariSilicon X. This chip was presented on the occasion of Inno Days, an event during which the Chinese manufacturer presents its innovations.
“With this new processor, we are making one of the biggest breakthroughs we’ve made so far. Today we can bring more power to photo systems and create exceptional experiences for all of our users ”, says Jiang Bo, product manager at the phone giant. This is a processor dedicated to the photographic processing of the smartphone. Engraved in 6 nm, it does not replace the main SoC of the phone (the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for example), but it supports it.
More precisely, it is an NPU, “neural processing unit”. To understand: this chip gives pride of place to artificial intelligence (and therefore algorithms). The MariSilicon X will be present on the next Find X in 2022 (Oppo Find X4 Pro in particular).
Oppo’s promises are ambitious in several ways. The idea is to optimize both the quality of the image and the speed of execution of the tasks. “This processor also has a memory system that allows it to use its full power without being limited by memory. This greatly reduces the time required to copy data between the storage unit and the processing unit ”, Oppo advances.
In terms of image quality, the first thing to remember is a much more impressive dynamic management. Concretely, we can therefore expect a much better rendering on the brightest and darkest areas of a scene, without having to compromise between the two.
Oppo presents augmented reality “Air Glass”
Like Google, the Chinese manufacturer OPPO is following in the footsteps of the American and entering fully into the field of augmented reality, where it was not necessarily expected. With its Air Glass, Oppo intends to democratize this concept, embodied in the form of a small projector of 30 g which is placed on a branch of glasses.
The Oppo Air Glass is actually just a small device to be placed on the temple of an eyeglass frame. The object weighs 30 g, has a touch bar to control it and incorporates the Snapdragon Wear 4100 chip found in some connected watches. It incorporates a microled panel which collects the display sent by a microprojector, made up of five lenses to provide a bright and clear display.
Designed to be accessible to as many people as possible, Air Glass can fit on a half-frame without lens, as well as on a full frame. The device is obviously compatible with corrective lenses. Oppo’s Air Glasses have various means of guidance, the most basic being an application called Smart Glass.
Air Glasses can be controlled by touch (thanks to the touch branch), voice, gestures and even head movements.
They will not be available before the first quarter of 2022, in China initially, the time to take the temperature, and correct any comments, before launching this type of product in the rest of the world.
