World tennis No.1 Serbian Novak Djokovic was beaten on Saturday by Spaniard Pablo Carreno (11th) in the bronze match of the Olympic tennis tournament, 6-4, 6-7 (8/6) , 6-3.
The Serb, who came to Japan in search of gold and who appeared as the big favorite among the men, was beaten in the semi-final on Friday by Alexander Zverev.
He thus fails at the foot of the podium as in London in 2012. Carreno brings him to Spain his first medal in tennis since 2008, when Rafael Nadal was crowned Olympic champion.
After the loss, the Serbian withdrew from the mixed doubles bronze medal match with compatriot Nina Stojanovic due to a shoulder injury, the International Tennis Federation reported on Saturday.
Note that this left shoulder injury comes one month before the US Open (August 30- September 12) where the world No. 1 can achieve the Grand Slam, after his success at the Australian Open, at Roland -Garros and Wimbledon.
