The Kingdom of Morocco was unanimously re-elected to the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO for the period 2023-2025, during the elections which took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the UNESCO, for the 32nd session of the IOC Assembly (21-30 June).
A press release from the Permanent Delegation of Morocco to UNESCO indicates that Morocco’s re-election to this important body reflects, once again, the recognition of the international community of the Kingdom’s active role as a committed actor on the scene. international.
It also reaffirms, adds the same source, the Kingdom’s commitment to intergovernmental cooperation in the fields of research and marine observation, the conservation and protection of the marine environment, the mitigation of risks related to the oceans, capacity building and development, among other areas of competence of the Commission.
This commitment is also part of Morocco’s efforts to achieve the Objectives of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and to implement the priorities defined in the Oceans Decade Roadmap for Africa.
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is the only intergovernmental body of the United Nations entirely devoted to the development of oceanographic sciences. It plays a central role in promoting international cooperation in marine science to improve the management of oceans, coasts and marine resources and enables its member states to work together by coordinating programs for capacity building, observation and ocean services, ocean science, tsunami warning and ocean awareness.
The IOC is also responsible for coordinating the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030, the “Decade of the Oceans”.
