Morocco has great assets to carry out the desalination of water at a lower cost, said Friday in Rabat, the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka.
Nizar Baraka. indicated that it is currently a question, through the new strategy of the Ministry of Equipment and Water, of tackling the desalination of water, highlighting, for this purpose, the two maritime facades enjoyed by Morocco.
The Minister also cited Morocco’s achievements in the field of renewable energies, both solar and wind, which will be able, he noted, to guarantee the desalination of water at a lower cost.
He announced, in this regard, the launch of major stations in the southern regions (Laâyoune and Sidi Ifni), stressing that the new experience within the framework of a public-private partnership in the region of Chtouka Ait Baha is nature to guarantee the supply of drinking water in Agadir and to support the agricultural sector through the irrigation of several hectares of agricultural land.
The Dakhla project will also be launched through the exploitation of wind energy for water desalination, which will ensure the supply of drinking water and the irrigation of large agricultural areas without having to recourse to groundwater, noted Nizar Baraka.
Thus, the current level of the water table will be maintained while the use of water in the agricultural sector will be guaranteed, which will contribute to improving the incomes of small and medium-sized farmers in these regions, he said. said.
And to emphasize that all the tourist cities are moving towards this process like the city of Casablanca which saw this year the launch of its project in the matter, specifying that it will be proceeded with the desalination of the water, in this city, by 2026-2027, as well as in Safi (2025) and Nador.
In this context, the ministry aims to set up a total of 20 water desalination stations, said Nizar Baraka.
