Morocco’s national football team began their journey in the Arab Under-20 Cup (U20), which takes place in the city of Abha, Saudi Arabia, by beating Sudan 4-2 in a match played on Friday at the “Damak Club” stadium, counting for the first round of group F.
The first half ended in a draw (2-2), the goals for the Moroccan team having been scored by Yassine Khalifi in the 33rd and 38th minutes, while the double for the Sudanese team was scored by Amjad Issam and Mohamed Khader in the 18th and 43rd minutes.
In the second half, the Atlas Cubs managed to add two consecutive goals thanks to Mohamed Akhraz in the 55th minute, and Anas Mimouni in the 73rd minute.
With this victory, Morocco pockets the first three points of its course in the tournament to take the lead in the Group F standings, which includes Sudan and Palestine at its side.
The national team should cross swords with its Palestinian counterpart next Thursday during the last match of the group stage of this Arab Championship.
In the other match, which was also played on Friday, Tunisia beat Bahrain 3-0 in Group E of the Arab Cup.
The city of Abha, Saudi Arabia is hosting the 8th edition of the Arab Under-20 Cup, from July 20 to August 6, with the participation of 18 countries, divided into six groups consisting of 3 teams.
The leader of each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, in addition to the two best teams that occupy second place.
The Moroccan selection had already won the Arab U20 Cup twice, in 1989 after beating Iraq, the host country, and in 2011 in Morocco by dominating Saudi Arabia.
