The expansion of the automatic teller machine (ABM) network slowed down with the installation of only 39 new ABMs during the first half of 2021, allowing the network to reach 7,773 ABMs, an increase of 0.5% compared to end of 2020, according to the Center Monetary Interbancaire (CMI).
The best-equipped cities are Casablanca with 1,527 ATMs, Rabat (643), Marrakech (640), Tangier (458), Agadir (410) and Fez (391), specifies the CMI in a recent report on Moroccan payment activity.
During the first six months of this year, the ATM network made 160.3 million withdrawals by Moroccan and foreign bank cards, up 20.7%, for a total amount of 156.5 billion dirhams. (+ 19.8%), or an average monthly activity of 4,044 withdrawal operations for 3.9 million dirhams for each ATM, said the same source.
The ratio of the number of cards issued in Morocco by ATMs, defined by the ratio of outstanding Moroccan bank cards to the number of ATMs installed, stands at 2,305 as of June 30, 2021.
