In a joint statement, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) confirmed today that the 2023 Annual Meetings of both international institutions will proceed as planned from October 9 to October 15, 2023, in Marrakech.
This confirmation follows the earthquake in Al-Haouz province, 70 kilometers from Marrakech, and reflects the institutions’ confidence in Morocco’s crisis response, said the joint statement.
The decision comes after joint efforts with the Moroccan government to assess the measures taken to manage the earthquake’s impact and Marrakech’s readiness to host the event.
Morocco mobilized swiftly to provide aid, including first aid, medical care, shelter, food, and clothing. Plans for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and region upgrading are in place.
Marrakech will host Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors from 189 member countries, along with leaders, experts, and media, to discuss global economic challenges.
The event recognizes Morocco’s progress over the past 24 years and marks its return to the continent 50 years after hosting in Kenya in 1973.
