Malawi opened a consulate general in Laâyoune on Thursday, marking its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and for its territorial integrity.
The inauguration of this consulate took place in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his counterpart from Malawi, Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka.
More than twenty countries have so far opened diplomatic representations in the Moroccan Sahara.
In Laâyoune, the Malawi consulate will rub shoulders with those of the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Bahrain, Côte d’Ivoire, the Comoros Islands, Gabon, Sao-Tomé-Et-Principe, the Central African Republic, Burundi, from Eswatini and Zambia.
Referring to the opening of this consulate, at the end of talks on Wednesday with his counterpart from Malawi, Bourita had indicated that this representation will be the 24th in the southern provinces and the 18th of an African country, that is to say a third of the number. total of African states.
These states represent all regions of the African continent, and Malawi is thus the fifth member country of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to open a consulate in the Moroccan Sahara, after the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) , Zambia, Eswatini and Madagascar, he argued.
