Operations and trade between Spain and Algeria are disrupted, confirmed Thursday, the head of Spanish diplomacy José Manuel Albares, who denounced the maneuvers of the Algerian regime which violate the association agreement signed with Algeria. ‘European Union.
“Despite the Algerian declarations claiming that these were ill-intentioned fantasies on the part of Spain, there is indeed a blockage of commercial operations”, said the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs on national radio.
The Minister warned that Spain systematically informs the European Commission of all cases notified and detected, when Algeria blocks a commercial operation with Spain.
This was addressed by the Spanish Secretary of State for Commerce, Xiana Méndez who declared before the Congress of Deputies the violation of the association agreement with the EU by Algeria.
“We are witnessing, de facto, a blockage of trade flows in both directions, which we believe would constitute a violation of the Association Agreement with the European Union”, she told the Congressional Industry, Commerce and Tourism Committee.
She explains that this is an “almost total” blockage of commercial operations by Algeria, both in terms of imports and exports, with the exception of energy products.
The Spanish government has denounced the maneuvers of the Algerian authorities, having proceeded to the unilateral blocking of commercial operations in both directions and the violation of the association agreement with the European Union.
These blockages on the part of Algiers result from the announcement, on June 8, of the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship with Spain, in protest against the Spanish position supporting the autonomy plan for the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty, in a interference in the internal and sovereign affairs of Spain.
However, this Treaty of Friendship did not include an economic component, and only a political one between the two countries. The head of the Spanish diplomacy thus affirmed that the European Commission is closely monitoring the situation given that it is competent for this dossier.
It requests explanations from Algeria each time a commercial operation is blocked, he said, explaining that commercial relations between EU Member States and a third country are a competence of the European Commission.
With this hostile position vis-à-vis Spain, Algeria “violates its trade agreement with the European Union, through the prohibition of trade flows, current payments and capital movements, and the discrimination of one EU member state compared to others”said Xiana Méndez.
The European Union has reacted severely to Algeria’s decision to declare trade war on Spain. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, and the executive vice-president of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, issued a joint statement in which they expressed their “extreme concern” over the suspension of the Treaty of Friendship and Goodwill. neighborhood dating from 2002.
They warned that the European Union was going “to oppose any type of coercive measures applied against an EU Member State”.
