Lebanese President Michel Aoun has set the date for the legislative elections for May 15, the presidential office announced. President Aoun “had signed a decree inviting the electoral bodies to elect members of Parliament on May 15 for those residing in Lebanon, on May 12 for employees participating in the electoral process, and on May 6 and 8 for Lebanese expatriates” , indicates the same source in a press release.
“No decision had been taken on the appeal filed by the + strong Lebanon + bloc led by Gibran Bassil, with regard to the amendments to the electoral law”, underlined the president of the Lebanese Constitutional Council, Tannous Mechleb.
Last October, the Lebanese Parliament adopted a law stipulating that the legislative elections will be held early on March 27, 2022, instead of May 8 of the same year. Lebanon has been experiencing for two years one of the worst economic crises in the world since 1850, according to the World Bank, with an unprecedented depreciation of its currency and an impoverishment of the population.
