Italian political scientist Marco Baratto commented on the Kingdom of Morocco’s choice not to participate in the UN General Assembly vote on the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. For him, this is a “wise” and “sharp” decision.
This non-vote, he said, reflects Morocco’s diplomatic model, “a singular model that advocates peace and dialogue”.
According to the political scientist, “Morocco, with its forward-looking vision, is becoming a model in the region”, in the sense that Moroccan policy takes into account its African, Atlantic and Mediterranean dimension.
And to add, “the Kingdom opts for multilateralism and banishes the logic of the cold war, which will only exacerbate the conflict”, thus complying with international law aimed at preserving peace and security in the world.
The political scientist notes in this respect that “without any economic or geostrategic interest, Morocco is positioning itself today as a protagonist of peace, a path that it has always taken”.
As a reminder, the Kingdom expressed its position in relation to the ongoing conflict and the vote at the UN, in two press releases dated February 26 and March 2. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad thus highlighted that “Morocco is following with concern the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine, reiterates its support for the territorial integrity and national unity of all Member States of the United Nations, recalls its attachment to the principle of non-use of force for the settlement of disputes between States and encourages all initiatives and actions promoting the peaceful settlement of conflicts. .
Morocco’s non-participation cannot be interpreted in relation to its position of principle concerning the situation between the Russian Federation and Ukraine, as reaffirmed in the MFA press release dated February 26 2022, the text said.
