Like other countries bordering Ukraine, the scene of a Russian military offensive since Thursday, Hungary has seen an influx of hundreds of displaced people, including many Moroccans, who wish to cross the border.
In order to welcome, assist and facilitate the passage of Moroccans coming from Ukraine, the Moroccan diplomatic mission in Budapest has been hard at work since the situation developed.
In this regard, the Moroccan Ambassador to Hungary, Karima Kabbaj, from the Zahony crossing point, exactly at the Ukraine station, that “so far many Moroccan students have arrived at this border post”.
“Since the outbreak of the crisis in Ukraine, a cell has been set up at the embassy level to monitor the situation, the priority being to seek ways to evacuate Moroccan citizens residing in Ukraine through safe corridors”, underlines the diplomat.
She specifies in this context that the embassy has made contact with the Hungarian authorities in order to allow Moroccan citizens to cross the Hungarian border without a visa.
After the approval of the Hungarian side, continues the Ambassador of Morocco in Budapest, “5 embassy staff members were dispatched to transit points on the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, and telephone numbers were available to citizens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Once they arrive at the border post, Moroccans coming from Ukraine “are taken care of by diplomatic staff who work to facilitate their passage through border points and provide the means to transport them to the nearest Hungarian town. “.
The diplomat recalls that members of the embassy “constantly communicate with citizens and their families via phone calls and e-mails, as the mission has received hundreds of calls since Friday”.
