Heatwave kills 360

The Spanish Ministry of Health has recorded 360 deaths attributable to the high temperatures recorded during the first six days of the heat wave affecting Spain (July 10-15).

The latest data collected by the Daily Overheating Mortality Monitoring statistics refer to Friday, July 15, which is the maximum peak, with 123 deaths in one day, the ministry said.

In detail, on the first day of the heat wave, Sunday July 10, there were 15 deaths attributable to the temperature.

Since then, there has been a continuous escalation, since the next day, Monday 11, 28 deaths due to excessive temperature were recorded.

This figure rose to 41 cases last Tuesday and 60 deaths on Wednesday July 13. The next day, July 14, was, along with Friday, one of the worst days of the heat wave, since in some municipalities values close to 44 or 45ºC were recorded, such as in the valleys of the Tagus, Guadiana and of the Guadalquivir, 42ºC in the Miño valley and 41ºC in the Ebro valley and in the central area.

On Thursday, 93 heat-related deaths were counted, a figure which rose to 123 on Friday July 15.

In addition to the deaths, dozens of fires were still raging from north to south of Spain due to the heat wave. In the Extremadura region, an outbreak of “unfavorable developments” led to the closure of a section of the A5 motorway on Saturday morning, linking Madrid to the Portuguese border.

At the same time, in the far south of Andalusia, a fire near Malaga forced the preventive evacuation of more than 3,000 people, according to the Andalusian emergency services.
