The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced the appointment of Héctor Gómez and José Manuel Miñones Conde as Minister of Industry and Minister of Health, respectively, following the departure of Reyes Maroto and Carolina Darias , who “resigned” to stand in the municipal elections of Madrid and Las Palmas, scheduled for May 28.
The new minister of industry, trade and tourism, Héctor Gómez, who was already part of Reyes Maroto’s team in this ministry, is currently president of the constitutional commission in the Congress of Deputies.
The new health minister, José Manuel Miñones, holds a doctorate in pharmacy and has worked as a government delegate in Galicia.
Pedro Sánchez defined them as “two excellent civil servants, with an irreproachable background and an unwavering commitment to the defense of the general interest”.
The President of the Government indicated that with the new appointments, the executive will face the last straight line of the legislature by persevering in the objectives announced in his inauguration speech: transforming the productive model, strengthening public services, deploying a transition ecological fairness and advance in real and effective equality between men and women.
Despite the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and economic uncertainty, Sánchez said Spain has been able to move forward thanks to the reforms carried out and the social pacts concluded by the coalition government.
In addition, the 140 billion euros in EU funds represent a great opportunity to create more and better jobs and achieve stronger and fairer growth, he said.
