In France the regional and departmental were dominated this Sunday, June 20 by a record abstention. Indeed the latter exploded with two French out of three not to have gone to the polls to vote between 66.1% and 68.6%. As for the results, we can see the underperformance of the RN, the solidity of the left and the traditional right in maintaining the outgoing (regional) presidents and the rout of the presidential party the Republic on the move LREM.
The abstention figure threw a chill like never before and it is the only lesson to be learned from this first round because never have the French shunned the ballot box so much (in 2010 the lowest participation was 50%) . These regional and departmental were marked by the resistance of outgoing presidents to maintain whether they are left or right and this unique little glimmer of hope for RN to finally see in the second round a first region through Provence- Alpes-Côtes d’Azur (PACA). But for that it will be necessary that the RNist Thierry Mariani can benefit from the voices of the left which should very probably benefit the outgoing president Renaud Muselier (LR). This is the only real uncertainty in this second ballot.
It will be noted that the Left-Right duo will have resisted more than ever, the Left all components combined for this total 34.4% and the right in all its forms 28.7% of the votes collected. With 9 points less than in the last exercise (2015) that the RN suffered an affront. Recognizing that his constituents had not come, Marine Le Pen called on his troops to jump. Also in withdrawal, the presidential majority candidates who total only 11.5% of the votes cast in this first round. Eliminated in Hauts-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Occitanie and barely a little more than 10% in other regions, the LREM lists suffered a severe rout. It is the macronie which pays the price for it which made say to a minister that it is Emmanuel Macron who makes the REM and not the reverse. LREM modestly bet on winning 15% of the vote. The presidential party is far from it and it will have to question itself.
