Saudi clubs Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, and Al-Ahli have collectively spent USD455 million so far on acquiring international players, constituting 94% of the total spending in the Saudi football league this season.
These transfers took place after the clubs were transformed into companies and a significant portion of their ownership was transferred to the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
The Saudi market has become a strong competitor to the major European leagues in terms of spending and attracting star players.
The recently launched strategy by the Saudi Pro League aims to elevate the league to be among the top 10 leagues in the world, by attracting elite players, enhancing competitiveness, raising the standard of local players, and substantial financial support from the Saudi Ministry of Sports for the clubs.
