Five Atlas lion cubs born in the Rabat National Zoological Garden (JZN) in 2021 will be presented to visitors from February, the zoo announced on Friday.
“The newborns benefited from appropriate veterinary monitoring and a period of close health surveillance to ensure their acclimatization to their new space”JZN said in a statement.
The Atlas lion, an endemic and emblematic species of Morocco, extinct in its original habitat since the last century, is the subject of a conservation program by the National Zoological Garden. This one maintains “a founding nucleus of about thirty lions, with the aim of ensuring regular reproduction and preserving this valuable faunal heritage”it is pointed out.
The conservation program dedicated to the Atlas Lions at JZN aims to rationalize reproduction through the continuous reorganization of breeding groups and the improvement of knowledge relating to the behavior and veterinary sciences of this species.
