Three England players, who missed penalties against Italy in the Euro 2020 final, have been victims of racist abuse online. The English Football Association has issued a statement condemning the language used against the players. The teams drew 1-1 after extra time and Italy won the trophy in a penalty shootout 3-2.
In its official statement, the FA declared itself “Dismayed” by racist abuse against three English players namely Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka.
The team had knelt before the start of the European Championship matches to extend their support for an end to racial inequalities. The young multi-ethnic English team had won the hearts of fans before failing to win the title on Sunday.
“The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism which targets some of our English players on social networks”, indicates the press release.
“We couldn’t be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behavior is unwelcome to follow the team. We will do our utmost to support the players concerned while demanding the most severe penalties possible for anyone responsible ”, he added.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also expressed on this unfortunate incident on his Twitter account. The Metropolitan Police have also opened an investigation into the abuse.
The Prime Minister tweeted his conviction on Monday morning describing “disgusting behavior” among some fans online and urging police to apply “the harshest penalties possible”.
This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media.
Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.
