EU expresses ‘firm rejection’ of ‘offensive and disrespectful’ act

The European Union on Saturday expressed its “firm rejection” of the burning of the Holy Quran outside a mosque in Stockholm, Sweden, an act that is “offensive, disrespectful and constitutes a clear provocation”.

“Manifestations of racism, xenophobia and intolerance associated with this act have no place in Europe,” said European diplomacy spokeswoman Nabila Massrali.

“It is even more deplorable that such an act was committed during the important Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha,” she added, assuring that “this act in no way reflects the views of the European Union”.

The EU continues to defend freedom of religion or belief and freedom of expression, continued the spokesperson for the European External Action Service.

And to conclude: Now is the time to unite for mutual understanding and respect and to prevent any further escalation.
