Erdogan claims presidential victory

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed victory in the second round of the presidential election in Turkey on Sunday.

“Our nation has given us the responsibility of governing the country for the next five years,” he said on the roof of a bus parked in front of his Istanbul residence, towards which an enthusiastic crowd converged.

Polling stations closed at 5 p.m. (local time) in Turkey, after an unprecedented second round of presidential elections.

Some 64 million voters were called to go to the polls for this crucial election for the future of the country, while nearly 1.9 million Turks have already voted abroad from May 20 to 24.
