The England national team won its first match of the European Football Championship “Euro 2020” against Croatia (1-0) on Sunday, played at Wembley Stadium in London, in the first poster of the group D.
Under the encouragement of the 22,500 spectators present at Wembley, Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling offered the victory to the Three Lions.
In the first minutes, the two teams observe each other cautiously, but without concrete results. However, the English quickly settle in the Croatian camp, monopolize the ball and end up drawing the first. After half an hour of play, the pace drops a notch and the discussions end up being balanced.
Held in check (0-0) at the break, the English can maintain some regrets, but the Croats did not attempt, for their part, the slightest shot on target at the end of the first period.
After a good British combination, Kalvin Phillips inherits the leather and ideally serves Raheem Sterling deep in the axis. The English striker comes face to face with Dominik Livakovic and adjusts the Croatian goalkeeper (57th, 1-0) to sign his 23rd goal in the English selection.
It is the first time that England have won their first match in a European Championship. Scotland’s next Group D game is against the Czech Republic on Monday (13:00 GMT) in Glasgow.
