With 14 nominations, including Best Drama Series, “Squid Game” made history this year, although HBO’s American series “Succession” topped the charts with 25 nominations. Indeed, “Squid Game”, a violent sci-fi thriller produced by Netflix and directed in South Korea, becomes the first non-English language series to be nominated for this award equivalent to the Oscars for television in the United States.
“Severance” also earned Apple TV + its first nomination for best drama series, after its first major Emmy award last year for “Ted Lasso”. With “Yellowjackets”, a film about the aftermath of the crash of a plane carrying a women’s football team, Showtime won its first nomination for best drama since “Homeland” in 2016.
In the Best Actor category, “Succession,” the saga of bitter rivalry between a wealthy New York family, is nominated for Lead Actor in a Drama. British actor Brian Cox will compete with former winner Jeremy Strong. Some of the hit TV shows were missing from the nominations including ‘The Boys’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Westworld’ as they did not air during the eligibility period of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022 .
