E-commerce is on the rise. Merchant sites and sites of billers affiliated with the Interbank Monetary Center (CMI) carried out 9.4 million online payment transactions via bank cards, Moroccan and foreign, for a total amount of 3.8 billion dirhams (MMDH) during the first half of 2021.
This activity is up 55.5% in number and 31.8% in amount compared to H1-2020, indicates the Center in a recent report, adding that the activity of online payments of Moroccan cards has increased by 57.1% to 9.1 million transactions and 34.4% to 3.6 billion dirhams.
The activity of online payments of foreign cards, for its part, increased by 18.6% to 308,000 transactions and fell by 7.3% to 166.8 million dirhams (MDH). The activity remains very strongly dominated by Moroccan cards to the tune of 96.7% in number of transactions and 95.6% in amount.
Regarding merchants and eMerchants affiliated to the CMI, they recorded 50.4 million payment transactions, by Moroccan and foreign bank cards, for 20.4 billion dirhams, an improvement of 34.3% in number of operations and + 6.6% in amount.
Payments by Moroccan and foreign bank cards are distributed, in terms of volume, over supermarkets (26%), clothing (11.4%), stations (7.1%), furniture & household items (5.8%) ), restaurants (5.4%), health (5.4%), Wallet top-ups (5%) and other sectors (33.9%).
The CMI also highlights the gradual but strong adoption of contactless payment. The rate of the number of contactless transactions rose from 7.6% in number and from 2.9% in amount during the 1st half of 2020 to a rate of 28.9% in amount and 13.4% in number during the 1st semester 2021.
