On the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, UN Secretary-General Guterres urged the world to heed the lessons of the devastating event in 1945.

He expressed concern about the resurgence of nuclear tensions, emphasizing that “the drums of nuclear war are beating once again.”

Guterres stressed the need for unity and global commitment to a nuclear-free world, in line with his New Agenda for Peace, which calls for strengthened norms against nuclear weapons use and proliferation.

“States possessing nuclear weapons must commit to never use them,” Guterres noted, highlighting the UN’s ongoing efforts to reinforce disarmament and non-proliferation rules, including the Treaty for Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
