An international network active in the detention, hunting and illegal trafficking of eagles was dismantled, recently in Marrakech, said Thursday the Regional Directorate of Water and Forests and the fight against desertification of the High Atlas in Marrakech.
“On the basis of precise information obtained by elements of Waters and Forests, an international network active in the detention, hunting and illegal trafficking of eagles was dismantled,” reads the press release. the Regional Directorate.
During this operation, it was also proceeded to the seizure of eight hawks, in addition to a significant quantity of game belonging to protected species, and which were hunted thanks to the use of these species of raptors, added the same source.
And to continue that a vehicle suspected of being used in the transport of hawks was subjected to the control on November 16, specifying that the investigations carried out and the interrogation to which the owner was subjected, with the assistance of the elements of the Royal Gendarmerie, under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office, revealed that it is an operation of illegal trafficking of eagles, whose owners are people from a Gulf country.
The Regional Directorate of Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification of the High Atlas in Marrakech indicated that the seizure was carried out on November 17 at the Marrakech-Menara international airport, in coordination with the Customs services, of eight anesthetized and carefully concealed hawks, noting that these birds were in the possession of people who were the subject of a search notice and who were preparing to leave the national territory aboard a private jet ”.
“Elements of Water and Forests therefore went to Marrakech airport to seize the eagles, the subject of the investigation, which was deepened by the judicial police, with the accused, under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office ”, specifies the same source.
For the sake of completing the investigation and investigations, and in order to elucidate this affair, a team made up of elements from the Royal Gendarmerie and Water and Forests made the trip to Sidi Bennour, on instructions from the competent public prosecutor’s office, to ascertain the origin of the hawks and seek out any individuals involved in this affair.
In this sense, the said team managed to get their hands on a significant amount of “frozen” game belonging to protected species, hunted with the help of eagles, the same source said.
“The Department of Water and Forests welcomes the efforts made by its elements to deal with the scourge of the possession and illegal trafficking of game, while calling on all the actors concerned to redouble their efforts to put an end to this reprehensible practice ”, continues the same source.
At the same time, the Regional Directorate of Water and Forests of the High Atlas in Marrakech welcomed the high degree of coordination and the support provided by all the partner services, namely: the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Royal Gendarmerie, the administration of the Customs and the National Security of Marrakech.
